SHELL and SCUDERIA FERRARI renew partnership for more motorsport innovation

19 February 2021, Maranello. Shell has renewed its long-standing partnership with Scuderia Ferrari in its quest for success on the racetrack while supporting advances in technology and sustainability.
During the next exciting phase of this collaboration, Scuderia Ferrari and Shell will not only further their fight for on-track victories through effective product development, but also develop and introduce solutions that will contribute to reducing the team’s carbon footprint and delivering on their wider sustainability goals.

These plans are in line with Formula One’s first ever sustainability strategy. It sets the ambitious goal of achieving a zero net carbon footprint both on and off the track by 2030.

Scuderia Ferrari and Shell will continue to work together to improve the V6 turbo hybrid engine, which already has a thermal efficiency of almost 50%. This makes it one of the most efficient engines in the world. The two companies will work hand-in-hand to determine how fuels can be developed for the future to include sustainable biofuels and synthetic liquid fuels. These two options are being explored to contribute to Formula One’s goal of fully sustainable fuels in cars. Lessons learned from this research and the technologies being tested on track can also be used to reduce emissions from road transport.

The historic partnership between Shell and Scuderia Ferrari, dating back to 1929, is one of the most successful and recognisable in Formula One. Using Shell racing fuels and oils, the Scuderia Ferrari team has won 10 constructors’ titles and been world champion 12 times. As part of this long-standing collaboration, innovation and lessons from the race track have been used to develop better products for Shell customers around the world.

Istvan Capitani, Shell’s Global Executive Vice President for Mobility, commented on the renewal of the partnership, saying, “Our partnership with Ferrari has produced some truly remarkable innovations that Shell regularly relies on to develop new fuels and oils for our customers. We are entering a very exciting time in our shared history as we use this collaboration not only to achieve success on the track, but also to create cleaner fuels and oils for our customers.”

Mattia Binotto, Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal, commented, “The partnership between Scuderia Ferrari and Shell dates back to 1929, the year our team was founded. In that time we have won so many victories together. We are happy that this collaboration will continue for a long time to come. We share common values – the pursuit of excellence, the competitive spirit, teamwork. They are what have made this partnership unique in motorsport. As partners in innovation, we will continue to work with Shell to bring racing technology to transport, and to address all the challenges that lie ahead, including the realisation of Formula One’s goal of zero net emissions by 2030.”
